Main purpose of the job:

  • To oversee and direct the work of Counsellors to provide HIV rapid testing services that include holistic HIV counselling and adherence support to clients receiving services within supported areas

Location:

  • Wits RHI – Research Centre - 7 Esselen Street, Hillbrow, - Johannesburg
  • On the 3rd and 4th Floor

Key performance areas:

  • Support Counsellors in the implementation of HIV Counselling and testing
  • Support Counsellors in the implementation of HIV self-testing services (where applicable)
  • Ensure related quality control procedures are followed
  • Ensure counsellors document results as required
  • Oversee the availability of resources for Counsellors to implement HIV counselling and testing efficiently
  • Overseeing that all required training is done
  • Supervise Counsellors overall performance
  • Perform HIV rapid tests
  • Ensure related quality control procedures are followed
  • Ensure results are documented as required
  • Ensure Counsellors provide pre and post-testing counselling
  • Provide HIV information to participants that include but is not limited to risk reduction, ARV’s, adherence and nutrition
  • Provide counselling regarding participant disclosure
  • Ensure that confidentiality is maintained
  • Conduct in-depth one on one counselling sessions and group counselling as and when required in accordance with counselling guidelines
  • Provide adherence and contraceptive counselling if applicable
  • Review, evaluate and document participant progress in participant binders
  • Collect, collate, and consolidate reports on a daily and weekly basis and as required
  • Report all activities to site leadership
  • Assist with research-related activities as and when required
  • Ensure all QC errors are addressed timeously
  • Comply with Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Protocol requirements and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Verify the accuracy of data in source documentation and accuracy of transcription from source data to Case Report Forms (CRF) as needed
  • Ensure errors on source documents e.g., CRF’s are corrected, initialled, and dated (as needed)
  • Support the timely data entry/transmission/data faxing of relevant Case Report Forms following QC activity (as needed)
  • Ensure completion of corrective action of internal and external QC reports and monitoring reviews
  • Assist with staff training (and retraining) where error trends are identified
  • Prepare files for monitoring visits and requirements
  • Meet and communicate with Monitors as and when required
  • Mentoring of staff on QA/QC procedures
  • Take ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrate effective self-management
  • Follow through to ensure that quality and productivity standards of own work are consistently and accurately maintained
  • Maintain a positive attitude and respond openly to feedback
  • Take ownership for driving own career development by participating in ongoing training and development activities such as forums, conferences, policy setting workshops, etc.

Required minimum education and training:

  • Matric/Grade 12, Basic Certificate in HIV Testing Services

Required minimum work experience:

  • 2 years experience in HIV Testing Services (HTS)
  • 2 years Counselling experience (worked as counsellor/mentor/team leader)

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:

  • Experience with Adherence Counselling and SRH counselling would be advantageous
  • Ability to write reports and timely submission of these, and to use Microsoft Office packages
  • Ability to analyse data for the teams and support them to compile their weekly plans
  • Fluency in more than one language (especially English & Sesotho)
  • Experience working for Donor funded projects or in the NGO environment
  • Experience working for Donor funded projects or in the NGO environment
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work towards deadlines
  • Be a team player
  • Good interpersonal, supervision, mentorship, coaching, communication, and time management skills
