JOB SUMMARY:
The University of Fort Hare seeks to appoint a qualified and experienced candidate for the vacant position in the Finance Department.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Key job functions
  • Strategic managerial tasks and activities
  • Following up and monitoring all the CFO’s initiatives that are of strategic nature/interest to the University and draw up progress reports;
  • Tracking and monitoring of progress on tasks assigned by the CFO to various senior managers in his/her Division and integrating or collating reports where required;
  • Taking minutes at meetings that are not supported by the Committees section;
  • Editing and conducting quality assurance on submissions from the Executive’s office to the Management Executive Committee (MEC) or other University structures;
  • Ongoing monitoring of the Division’s performance in relation to the Annual Performance Plan (APP) and other planning instruments and identifying areas of concern.
  • Technical financial matters
  • Based on the CFO and Finance Directors requirements, develop relevant reporting dashboards for enhancing decision making.
  • Develop a list of key improvements initiatives in finance and regularly report on these.
  • Formally implement a projects management process/ culture in the Finance Directorate.
  • Continuous liaison with the CFO office and finance units on the development of the finance strategy and reporting on the actual performance against targets
  • Coordinate the implementation of action items across the entire finance unit as agreed in the Departmental meetings.
  • Oversee the finance policies and procedures into a new format and add additional policies needed to ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure policy and procedure owners include all required elements into the related documents by providing training to the owners.
  • Work with Finance Managers to develop new or revisions to existing finance policies and procedures as the requirements dictate.
  • Ensure an appropriate repository of finance policies, regulations and procedures is maintained.
  • High level communication
  • Handling incoming and outgoing correspondence for the CFO and drafting responses on behalf of the Executive;
  • Ensuring compliance with timelines and drafting an appropriate response to all requests for information from external institutions such as Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), Finance Executive Forum (FEF), National Students Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), South African Revenue Service (SARS), bankers, investment managers, insurers, subsidiaries, donors/funders and other financial stakeholders;
  • Preparing notices and circulars addressed to the University community at the request of the CFO;
  • Preparing presentations and drafting speeches.
  • Research and information gathering
  • Conducting research and collating background information to support the CFO in the execution of his/her functions;
  • Drafting briefing documents and summaries of reports;
  • Writing reports on behalf of the CFO for internal University structures as well as external bodies.
  • Project management and coordination
  • Leading or coordinating key projects assigned by the CFO;
  • Tracking progress on project deliverables;
  • Managing timelines and project flows;
  • Writing project reports and keeping project records.
  • Office management
  • Compiling the budget and monitoring expenditure in the office.
  • Ensuring sound human relations within the office, including in its interaction with the University community and external stakeholders
  • Manage a small team in the Office of the CFO.
Minimum Requirements

Qualifications and experience
  • Master’s degree in Commerce/Business Administration or relevant/equivalent with 5 years of relevant work experience;
  • Proven 3 Years’ Experience working with Finance Executives/Senior Finance Management for example Financial Director or Chief Financial Officer.

  • Demonstrable ability to build and maintain effective relationships with leaders, staff, partners, other stakeholders both within the University and the Higher Education sector, and beyond, with the ability to adapt style accordingly.
  • Approachable, with a high level of personal motivation, energy and enthusiasm.
  • An understanding of the operations and affairs of a University environment will be an added advantage
