SUMMARY:
A New Business Development Lead vacancy is available at one of our Clients, Wits Health Consortium's Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (RHI) in Hillbrow, Johannesburg - Gauteng.

POSITION INFO:

Background

The Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI) is a renowned African-led research institute that seeks solutions to Africa’s health challenges.

It is located within the University of the Witwatersrand and addresses some of the greatest public health concerns affecting our region, including HIV and its related problems, sexual and reproductive health and vaccinology. This is done through pioneering, multi-disciplinary research; responsive technical support and innovation in health services; and evidence-based policy development and advocacy with national, regional and global stakeholders.

Main purpose of the job

  • To initiate and lead new business efforts in the organization
  • Develops and implements plans in so far as opportunity capture management, lead proposal development, financial acumen and guidance in grant and proposal writing and contributes to technical writing in the areas of Wits RHI’s Research, implementation science and health system strengthening focus areas

Key performance areas

  • Develop comprehensive strategic plans with detailed execution plans in close collaboration with the COO and input from the Executive Director to enable projects to achieve greater financial sustainability
  • Research into relationships that should be developed and manage effective partnerships with both existing and new partnerships with government, donors, NGOs, and corporate sector to help open channels from which Grant and Project opportunities can be derived
  • Lead efforts at monitoring and tracking opportunities with USAID, PEPFAR, CDC and other local and international donors and keep informed of key trends with these donors
  • Build pipeline, conduct scoping and pre-positioning and design approaches for top targets
  • Explore and initiate strategic partnerships for fundraising opportunities
  • Work with the Communications to keep the website content current and development and promotional literature in direct support of targeted opportunities
  • Manage the full cycle of the RFA and proposal development process in coordination with other team members
  • In conjunction with the COO align the Income strategy with that of the organization and other programmes, seeking to maximize effectiveness through collaboration
  • Actively participate and where required arrange and facilitate required management forums to mobilize, monitor and conclude; grant and proposals; Manage logistics for strategy meetings, partnership engagements, and proposal writing
  • Manage research efforts to provide background information and competitor and partner analyses for major proposal efforts
  • Lead and contribute to proposal writing and budget narratives for identified RFA’s
  • Work closely with the Grants Accountants (WHC) and Project Teams to develop competitive budgets ensuring allowable expenses are maximized
  • Establish a monitoring and management information system, and use the data for analysis to improve strategy, planning and productivity
  • Review and input on sub partner budgets and negotiations inclusive of determining and capturing the adequate scope of work outline for sub-recipients
  • Editorial, formatting, and final packaging of final proposal ensuring RFA compliance
  • Provide input, support, and review of all RFA’s and proposals budgets to ensure full compliance and all allowable expenses are maximized
  • Develop cost proposals for the identified RFA’s
  • Provide input and guidance into the cost recovery approach/strategy
  • Conduct Cost Recovery compliance reviews ensuring projects are costed accurately through all life stages of projects
  • Conduct projects procurement compliance reviews assessing accuracy against budget and identifying trends where correction should take place
  • Manage relevant stakeholder relationships, both internal and external thereby enhancing the Business Development Team Brand and the overall Company values
  • Stay appropriately networked and keep abreast of trends, news, events and deadlines, so that all possible, new or enhanced opportunities are exploited
  • Work effectively with internal decision-makers, i.e., Executive director, COO, Grants Head, Directors and technical heads to develop and conclude winning proposals
  • Actively seek out opportunities to promote growth amongst Project teams and Business Development Team to upskill and capacitate
  • Attend to all staffing requirements and administration
  • Maintain and update knowledge of developments in the field and expertise

Required minimum education and training

  • A Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience; or an MPH, MBA or a Master’s degree with strong financial and/or grants background
  • Formal Project Management Training

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to manage a full-cycle new business development process as well as experience managing proposal teams where some incumbents may not be line reports
  • Knowledge of the global public health agenda and key health donors is required; knowledge of strategic health initiatives of USG, such as PEPFAR, desired
  • Demonstrated network of contacts in the international health community strongly desired; Excellent analytical, conceptual, verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to multi-task; ability to work efficiently and independently in a fast-paced environment and under stress
  • Must have strong interpersonal and troubleshooting skills
  • High change management ability and understanding
  • Highly responsive approach with customer-centric values
  • Be a proactive agent influencing positive change with external stakeholders with the ability to develop and maintain relationships at all levels of Wits RHI and partner organizations
  • Positive, energetic leader with an ability to adapt to complex situations, manage stress and deliver actively

Required minimum work experience

  • Must have experience working with USG; experience working with other health sector donors is a plus
  • At least 3 years of direct business development and proposal management experience with the health sector proposals. 5 – 7 years management experience with at least three years of senior management experience
  • Successful reporting and grant writing experience
