SUMMARY:
The University of Cape Town Lung Institute (www.lunginstitute.co.za), requires applications for a PAYROLL SPECIALIST* position, on a Fixed Term Contract.

The Lung Institute, a subsidiary of the University of Cape Town, is a globally recognised medical research facility with a mandate to address priority health issues through Education, Research and Service.

The Payroll Specialist will be responsible for managing and processing the Institute’s payroll to ensure all employees are paid accurately and on time. This role requires strong attention to detail, knowledge of payroll laws, and excellent organizational skills.

POSITION INFO:

Minimum Requirements:

Grade 12 / Equivalent (Required)
Certificate or diploma in Accounting, HR or Payroll (Required)
1 – 3 years’ experience in payroll or accounting roles

Skills and Attributes

Knowledge of payroll systems
Strong math and data-entry skills
Understanding of tax regulations and labor laws
Excellent attention to detail
Ability to handle confidential information
Good communication and problem-solving skills

Responsibilities include (but not limited to):

Process weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly payroll for all employees
Maintain accurate employee records (hours worked, pay rates, deductions, benefits)
Calculate wages, overtime, bonuses, and commissions
Ensure compliance with tax laws and regulations
Prepare and distribute pay slips
Handle payroll queries from employees
Reconcile payroll reports and correct discrepancies
Assist with year-end tax documents
Collaborate with HR Finance departments

Additional Information:

Full-Time onsite position, 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday
12 months Fixed Term Contract
This position will be based in Mowbray, Cape Town
