Structural, Mechanical, Piping & Platework (SMPP Supervisor)
POSITION INFO:
Our client in the mining sector is recruiting an experienced (Structural, Mechanical, Piping & Platework) SMPP Supervisor to provide client-side oversight of all structural steel, mechanical equipment, piping, and platework activities performed by the EPC Contractor and its subcontractors on a large-scale mining and mineral processing project. The role focuses on monitoring HSE, quality, installation progress, and compliance with approved project requirements, including specifications, IFC drawings, codes of construction, OHSA, and MHSA. The successful candidate will perform routine field inspections and quality surveillances, working closely with the Construction, Quality, Engineering, and HSE teams. The EPC Contractor remains responsible for managing and controlling its work and subcontractors. The Supervisor will verify that the work is being correctly planned, supervised, inspected, and completed in accordance with the contract. Key Responsibilities Be a visible HSE leader and meet the HSESC Charter Commitments. Promote project HSE standards and expectations throughout the SMPP work areas. Monitor the EPC Contractor and its subcontractors for compliance with approved safety documents, procedures, permits, and method statements. Participate in pre-start meetings, toolbox talks, risk assessments, and coordination meetings when required. Conduct Critical Risk management verifications and HSE Verification and Assurance. Confirm that lifting activities, scaffolding, working at heights, confined space work, hot work, and equipment installation are properly planned and controlled. Intervene and escalate unsafe conditions or practices through the agreed project channels. Support incident investigations and verify that corrective actions are implemented. Oversee structural steel, mechanical equipment, piping, and platework activities carried out by the EPC Contractor and its subcontractors. Monitor the work against approved drawings, specifications, method statements, construction schedules, and vendor requirements. Confirm that the EPC Contractor has suitable supervision, competent personnel, approved documentation, materials, tools, and equipment before starting work. Inspect foundations, anchor bolts, structural steel erection, alignment, bolting, grouting, and final inspection. Oversee the installation and alignment of mechanical equipment, piping systems, tanks, chutes, hoppers, ducting, and other platework. Monitor piping fabrication, fit-up, welding, supports, pressure testing, flushing, and reinstatement. Identify construction constraints, interface problems, and potential delays and raise them with the relevant project team. Monitor daily and weekly progress and confirm that reported progress reflects the actual work completed. Coordinate SMPP activities with civil, electrical, instrumentation, commissioning, and engineering teams. Attend progress, planning, technical, and coordination meetings with the EPC Contractor. Follow up outstanding work, punch-list items, and construction defects. Minimum Requirements Relevant trade qualification, diploma, or engineering qualification suitable to the SMPP role. Minimum 10 years'''''''' relevant construction experience, preferably in mining, minerals processing, oil and gas, or heavy industrial projects. Practical experience in structural steelwork erection, mechanical equipment installation, piping and platework installation, and testing. Satisfactory knowledge of drawings, specifications, ITPs, method statements, welding requirements, and inspection records. Previous experience on projects in the Richards Bay area is preferred. Previous experience in oversight and leading multicultural EPC contractors and multiple scopes at once. Previous experience supervising low-maturity contractors (highly favourable). Working knowledge of construction safety requirements, quality control, and commissioning preparation. Good written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work effectively in a multicultural project environment. Computer literate and able to prepare clear inspection, surveillance, and progress reports.
