JOB SUMMARY:
One of South Africa’s Big 5 Law Firms is seeking an English law Senior Associate to join the Banking & Finance Department in Johannesburg working. The successful candidate will ideally have exposure to banking and finance work, including opinion work and local and cross-border transactional work. If appointed, the candidate will develop excellent transaction management abilities as well as exceptional technical skills. The candidate will gain experience in English law governed debt transactions and financial services law.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Duties & Responsibilities

Drafting of agreements and corporate documents.
Managing transactions (including cross-border transactions) and engaging with borrower and lender clients and local counsel in other jurisdictions.
Researching and advising on all aspects of English law financial services legislation and contract law (as it applies to finance transactions).
Attending independently to matters.
Assisting with the training of junior team members and clients, on request.
Participating actively in the team's business development initiatives.

Qualifications & Experience

Qualified and admitted (or be in a position to be admitted) as a solicitor in England and Wales.
Have experience in a Banking & Finance practice and cross border transactional work.
Able to independently manage a cross-border transaction or aspects of a cross-border transaction.
Achievement-oriented, focused and able to work under pressure in a deadline driven environment.
Have a thorough knowledge of the law applicable to English debt finance transactions.
Have strong analytical skills.
Have the ability to self-regulate.
Have excellent drafting skills.
Have excellent communication skills (both verbal and written).
Have a keen interest in financial services legislation.
be willing to read / keep up with regulatory and market developments applicable to English finance law.
Have the capacity for hard work, long hours and quick turnaround times.
Demonstrate the ability to take part in and initiate client development activities.
Demonstrate the ability to train junior team members.
Demonstrate the ability to manage client relations, billing processes and practice management in general.
