POSITION INFO:

A leading organization is seeking a nearly qualified actuary to support its actuarial and analytics teams through advanced model development, technical pricing work, machine learning application, and crossâfunctional collaboration.
This role offers the opportunity to work across sophisticated actuarial platforms, build firstâprinciples models, and contribute to strategic decisions that influence business profitability and longâterm risk management.

Key Responsibilities

Build pricing models from first principles and enhance existing actuarial models.
Apply advanced modelling techniques including GLMs, decision trees, machine learning, and ensemble methods (e.g., Gradient Boosting, XGBoost).
Develop and implement modelling workflows using libraries such as pandas, scikitâlearn, XGBoost, and other advanced toolsets.
Work extensively with Emblem to design, calibrate, and deploy actuarial pricing models.
Develop actuarial models for pricing, reserving, or capital—depending on the candidate's area of strength.
Evaluate model performance, document methodology, and translate outputs into actionable insights.
Support automation initiatives and contribute to machine learning deployment workflows.
Work collaboratively with actuarial, analytics, and product teams to ensure accurate modelling and strong commercial outcomes.
Produce highâquality presentations and insights for key stakeholders and decisionâmakers.

Job Experience and Skills Required

Education

Nearly qualified actuary with a minimum of 10 actuarial exams completed.
Professional body membership required (e.g., Actuarial Society of South Africa or Institute and Faculty of Actuaries).

Experience

5+ years’ experience in actuarial or data science roles (pricing, risk, or analytics).
Proven experience building models from first principles.
Clear understanding of whether your background is strongest in pricing, reserving, or capital.
Experience delivering measurable business results through actuarial modelling.

Technical Skills

Strong proficiency in Emblem (essential).
Technical experience with:
- Python, R, SQL, Power BI
- Actuarial platforms such as Emblem, Radar, ResQ
- Earnix experience is advantageous.
Machine Learning application including GLMs, decision trees, gradient boosting, XGBoost, and ensemble methods.
Experience building automated workflows and deploying analytical models.

Commercial Skills

Ability to translate complex datasets into clear, actionable insights.
Strong communication skills with the ability to influence and engage key stakeholders.
Excellent analytical and problemâsolving capabilities.

Regulatory Advantage

Exposure to frameworks such as SAM or IFRS 17 will be beneficial.
