“BUSINESS DRIVEN” FINANCIAL DIRECTOR – CA (SA)

Join small to medium sized rapidly expanding Company that has grown exponentially at the rate of 50% per annum since its inception over the last 10 years or so. The key to its success is that the founder and CEO is ambitious, has an engineering background, is entrepreneurial & down to earth, analytical & mathematical, is a people’s person and employs high quality staff. He has recently sold a percentage of his Shareholding to an Investment Entity and together, they are currently driving growth into both South Africa and Africa. In due course, it is envisioned that expansion will take place by acquisition of similar type businesses and appointment of additional Agencies with the view to eventually diversify into other sectors as well.

This newly created position is seen as critical for the business, in that the Financial Director will not only take full responsibility for the financial and accounting arm (at the moment there are only 2 Bookkeepers and temps are used as and when needed) but the candidate will be fully involved in the operations of the Company. This will include advising the CEO in a plethora of business activities taking place as well as the more mundane aspects of the day to day accounting requirements and resolving problems that may arise.

Key performance areas, inter alia, include:

• Managing the current, small and fledgling Financial Department which will definitely grow over time as the business develops and in this regard, the FD will do all the new appointments.
• Produce the monthly management accounts and pack which stills needs to be refined and developed into providing meaningful financial and business management information together with all the relevant supporting schedules. In addition, control working capital, cash flow and present quarterly and half-yearly packs as well as prepare zero based annual budget & monthly forecasts. At the moment, a small Audit Firm is being used and the need to compile all the year-end audit schedules and information must be prepared and managed by the candidate.
• Be intricately involved with the CEO in assessing and finalising Supplier Agreements and other Contracts as well as appointing suitable Distribution Agencies which will involve assessing the type of Agreements that needs to be concluded and whether it should include a profit share, for example.
• Manage banking relationships, financial structures, obtaining the best deals available in raising finance for the positive growth that will continue in this entrepreneurial Company, establish correct Company structures in the African region. Naturally, each business transaction needs to be assessed for risk and risk management is also a key requirement in this role.
• Be further involved in business acquisitions and other expansion projects that are highlighted for future growth. This can take various forms and advice from the FD will play a pivotal role in this regard. It should be noted that not only are the industrial goods sold directly to customers and via an Agency network but are also rented and Agreements are in place for this type of business transaction.

Requirements:

• CA (SA) and in addition if there is a business qualification, this would certainly be a further recommendation due to the diversity of this financial and business role.
• Business and commercial acumen is an absolute essential requirement together with qualities such as being street smart, astute, personable, pragmatic, approachable and an attitude of being “hands-on”, as the candidate will also be involved in managing the day to day bookkeeping and accounting as well as other basic activities.
• Strong negotiation skills, people orientated, assertive yet diplomatic, experience in a product related industry noting that the customers are in the mining and manufacturing sector. Last but not least, as the candidate is a CA, the need to be very detailed, accurate and technically competent is a given!
