SUMMARY:
Are you a highly skilled Actuarial Data Science Specialist looking to drive advanced modelling and pricing innovation in a leading shortâterm insurance environment? This role is ideal for a technical expert who blends actuarial depth with modern machine learning to deliver measurable commercial impact across underwriting, claims, and customer analytics.

POSITION INFO:

An exciting permanent opportunity exists within a specialist shortâterm insurance business unit for an Assistant Vice President – Specialist Level Actuarial Data Scientist. This function plays a critical role in strengthening predictive pricing capabilities, improving risk segmentation, and influencing dataâdriven decisionâmaking at scale.

The role offers exposure to advanced modelling methodologies, alternative data integration, and enterpriseâwide collaboration across underwriting, claims, product, IT, and distribution. You will work alongside highâperforming analytics and pricing teams and contribute meaningfully to strategic model deployments that directly influence profitability, customer value, and risk performance.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead the design, development, and deployment of predictive models across the underwriting, claims, and customer segmentation.
Integrate emerging data sources (geospatial, behavioural, and external datasets) to enhance pricing accuracy and risk differentiation.
Drive model governance, transparency, documentation, and ethical dataâuse standards.
Collaborate crossâfunctionally to deliver highâimpact analytical and pricing solutions across multiple business units.
Partner with enterpriseâwide analytics teams to align modelling practices and adopt leading techniques and toolsets.
Mentor and support junior analysts and actuarial students.

Job Experience and Skills Required:

Education:
- Nearly qualified Actuary with 10+ actuarial exams completed.
- Membership with a recognised actuarial association (e.g. ASSA or IFoA).
Experience:
- 5+ years' actuarial or data science experience in shortâterm insurance pricing, risk, or analytics.
- Proven handsâon modelling experience within a live insurance environment – essential.
- Experience building pricing models from first principles, including GLMs, decision trees, ensemble methods, gradient boosting, XGBoost, etc.
- Ability to demonstrate measurable commercial impact from deployed models.
Technical Skills:
- Strong proficiency in Python, R, SQL, Power BI, and actuarial tools such as Emblem, Radar, and ResQ.
- Machine Learning: Libraries such as pandas, scikitâlearn, and XGBoost (please specify your experience).
- Understanding of automation, deployment, and model lifecycle management.
- Earnix experience advantageous.
- Exposure to SAM or IFRS 17 beneficial.
Soft Skills / Commercial Competencies:
- Ability to translate complex quantitative outputs into businessâready insights.
- Strong communication and stakeholderâinfluencing ability.
- Analytical thinking, problemâsolving, and commercial awareness.
- Experience mentoring or coaching junior staff.
